Brass,
White Brass, Copper, and Bronze are probably the most difficult
of all the non-ferrous metals to buff because of the deep
imperfections and softness of the metal.
In difficult situations, we recommend JacksonLea abrasive
belts be used prior to buffing, and Greasestick can be used
to speed up the finishing operation.
Less dense and drier compounds will eliminate some of the
“glazing” of brass onto the buffs which can produce
scratches. After removing the scale layer of metal, only enough
buffing should be done to produce
the finish desired (60/60 Cotton Cloth). Very aggressive buffing
of castings may open up holes that lie just below the surface
of the part.
Color
buffing requires a soft buff such as BR or Domet Flannel in
either a full disk or bias airway construction. Accumulated
compound in the buff should be avoided since imbedded metallic
particles will scratch the highly reflective surface.
Rouges, both green and red, are used to produce a very high
luster on brass and copper. The rouges are designed to run
very dry. Small amounts of rouge should be used, because excessive
rouge on the buff has a tendency to run dirty and “back
transfer.” This residue is difficult to remove, and
will necessitate raking the buff to remove the excess.
